What is cupping therapy?
Cupping therapy is an alternative treatment that uses suction to create a vacuum on the skin. Suction is produced either by heating the air inside glass cups or by using a manual or mechanical pump. Cups are commonly made from glass, bamboo, or silicone and are available in various sizes.
The practice dates back to ancient Chinese, Egyptian, and Middle Eastern traditions, where it was applied to address pain, inflammation, and respiratory problems. In modern practice, cupping is most often used to relieve muscle pain and promote relaxation.
During a session, cups may be left stationary on the skin for up to about 10 minutes or moved across the body in circular or gliding motions. Removal typically leaves circular marks or bruises (which are closer to hickeys) that generally resolve within a few days.
Some people report benefits for physical conditions such as migraines and fibromyalgia; others cite psychological advantages like reduced anxiety and improved well-being. Scientific evidence is mixed, and responses to cupping can vary between individuals.
Benefits of Cupping Therapy
Pain Relief: Cupping can help alleviate muscle tension, joint pain, and stiffness by improving blood circulation to the affected areas.
Improved Circulation: The suction created during cupping stimulates blood flow, which can aid in recovery and promote healing in soft tissues.
Reduction of Inflammation: By drawing blood and lymphatic fluids to the surface, cupping may help reduce localized inflammation and swelling.
Detoxification Support: Some practitioners believe that cupping assists in removing toxins from the body by encouraging lymphatic drainage.
Stress and Anxiety Relief: The muscle relaxation and increased blood flow often result in a calming effect, which can help reduce stress levels.
Enhanced Athletic Recovery: Athletes sometimes use cupping to speed up recovery from intense training sessions and to maintain muscle flexibility.
Support for Respiratory Health: Cupping is occasionally used to assist in relieving symptoms of colds, coughs, and congestion by loosening mucus and improving airflow.
